Are you a 4-12 grade student living within the Albany city limits?
Mayor Alex Johnson II welcomes you to submit your entry in our second annual local "If I Were Mayor..." contest!

Our local contest winners will go on to participate in the statewide contest presented by the Oregon Mayors Association (OMA).

Last year, 4th and 5th grade students from all nine Albany elementary schools and eleven essays were submitted. Our local middle school winner, Mikayla, went on to win 3rd Place in the State!

Submit your entry:

  2. If you are participating through your school or class, your teacher may arrange for your entries and entry forms to be submitted before the deadline. 
  3. Upload your completed entry form and entry by March 24, 2023:

  5. Create your submission (4-5: poster, 6-8: essay, 9-12: video).


Local winners will be announced by April 10, 2023.

Judging of the local contest will be conducted by city officials or other persons appointed by the mayor. A panel of Oregon mayors will judge the statewide entries. In selecting the winners, the judges will consider:

  • Creativity – Does the student demonstrate curiosity and originality?
  • Clarity/Sincerity of Thought – Is the submission well thought out and organized?
  • Proper Use of Grammar – Does the submission contain proper spelling, grammar and punctuation?
  • Subject Relevancy – Are the major points relevant to the role of a government leader? Does the student demonstrate an understanding of municipal government and the job of mayor

Mayors of the students who win in the statewide competition are notified in mid-July. First-place statewide winners and their parent(s) are recognized at an awards luncheon during the OMA Summer Conference in August.


Local contest

Local winners who qualify for the statewide contest will receive prizes that may include lunch with the Mayor and cash or other prizes from local organizations/businesses.

Statewide contest

The local winner in each age group are entered into the statewide contest. In the past, cash prizes for winners of the statewide competition have included $500.00 for first-place, $300.00 for second-place, and $100.00 for third-place. Prizes may vary year to year, dependent on available funding.
