Stormwater Master Plan; Identifying Existing Deficiencies – Open House

The City of Albany will hold two open-house events to review Albany’s stormwater system and identified deficiencies at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2018, and Thursday, May 3, 2018 in Council Chambers at Albany City Hall, 333 Broadalbin Street SW. The open house is being held on two evenings so that people who may have scheduling conflicts have a chance to attend. Each event will have an informal, come-and-go format with staff available to explain maps and respond to questions. A short introductory presentation will be made at 5:30 p.m. and staff will be on hand until 7:00 p.m. each evening.

The purpose of these sessions is to provide an opportunity for the public to review and comment on identified stormwater problem areas and point out areas that may have been missed. Feedback will be used to amend existing system deficiencies before taking the next steps to evaluate the stormwater system’s ability to serve growth. Future open houses will be held to review overall system needs and proposed improvement projects to include in the stormwater master plan.

The meetings are part of the City’s work to develop its stormwater master plan. Utility master plans are systemwide evaluations that plan for growth, consider regulatory requirements, identify deficiencies, and propose solutions. Identifying existing system deficiencies is typically the first step in that evaluation. For this master planning project, existing stormwater system deficiencies are identified by known street flooding locations and evaluating whether existing pipes are sized appropriately to serve existing development. Portions of town that are underserved and in need of dedicated drainage systems are also identified. City staff have worked with the consulting firm Cardno to identify existing system deficiencies.
