Neighborhood Watch was created to involve citizens in discouraging and preventing residential crime. Citizens secure their homes and personal property and report any suspicious activity to the police. In early 1972, the National Sheriff's Association developed a model program for today's Neighborhood Watch program. Although the rate of specific crimes such as burglary decreased tremendously, a further benefit has been the substantial reduction of other crimes due to citizen involvement.
